A Unique Approach

SHINE Goals

  • Improve academic performance
  • Improve student behavior and classroom attendance
  • Increase knowledge of STEAM
  • Facilitate family involvement in students' learning and improve family literacy

The SHINE afterschool program embraces a unique approach to education. Administered by Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC), the program is designed to be "... a seamless network of educational and social service." The program is student-focused and data driven; more than 20 sources of data are utilized to evaluate the program.

The success of the SHINE Afterschool Program lies in the "Whatever It Takes" philosophy adopted by SHINE instructors and adminstrators to help a student achieve his/her potential.

Twelve centers operate in Carbon and Schuylkill counties, serving more than 600 students. In  addition to the afterschool centers, SHINE incorporates non-traditional compenents such as: kindergarten & home visitor programs, parental involvement initiatives, family educational plans, summer and extended school-year activities, and professional staff development.

SHINE works hand-in-hand with community initiatives to create a safety net for children and families.
