Welcome to the SHINE Afterschool Program

What Is SHINE?

Daily Programming

SHINE operates Mon-Thur for 3 hours after the regular school day. Students are encouraged to attend every day to get the most out of their time with SHINE. All students receive an evening meal in accordance with federal nutritional guidelines. There is never any cost to attend SHINE.

Hands-On STEAM Activities

The SHINE Program focuses on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) concepts when developing lesson plans. Activities are designed to be innovative and experiential and are designed with an emphasis on high-priority occupations.

Whatever It Takes

The SHINE philosophy is best defined as ‘Whatever It Takes’ to develop the potential of every student.

How SHINE works

There is no typical day at SHINE!

Every day is filled with experiential activities to keep students motivated and involved. All activities are designed to build on the lessons being learned in students’ day school.

SHINE’s daily programming includes:

  • Homework help
  • STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) lessons
  • Physical fitness
  • Health and nutrition

SHINE has also developed programs for Kindergarten students as well as middle and high school students.

The SHINE Afterschool Program is free of charge for all students.

The SHINE Afterschool Program is funded in full or in part with a Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) grant and is administered by Lehigh Carbon Community College.

SHINE’s goals

SHINE’s mission is to prepare students for success in their schools, homes and communities. To achieve this mission, SHINE has identified the following four goals:

  • Improve academic performance
  • Improve student behavior and classroom attendance
  • Increase knowledge of STEAM
  • Facilitate family involvement in students’ learning and improve family literacy

The SHINE Afterschool Program now maintains 12 centers throughout Carbon and Schuylkill Counties. Since its inception, SHINE has more than tripled the number of children served and encompasses seven public schools, one technical school and four parochial schools.

In 2022 SHINE will begin operating a center in the Northern Lehigh School District.

Career Focused

The SHINE Afterschool Program is designed to give students a strong social and academic foundation for future success. Lessons are directly connected to the jobs and careers that will be in high demand in the coming years.

Through generous public and private grants, SHINE has been able to invest in educational space and cutting-edge technology which allows students to engage in hands-on lessons every day.

“It is critical that students understand not just what they’re learning, but why. SHINE helps students develop the skills and knowledge that will help them succeed in the future workplace. SHINE students are excited about learning and engaged in the lessons that will make them the leaders of tomorrow.”
